Tournament: A Variety Cryptic

by Foggy Brume

The following 30 clues represent teams (8-letter words) going through elimination rounds in a tournament. The "winner" of each round is made up of half of the letters of each "team." The first 16 clues are in order (clue 1 vs. clue 2, clue 3 vs. clue 4, etc.), while the last 14 clues are the 8 quarter-, 4 semi-, and 2 finalists. The result of the last game represents the goal of the puzzle.

Letters not going to the next round have either a capital letter (A-J) in the opening round or a star in subsequent rounds underneath their blank. Discarded letters in the opening round, when grouped by capital letter, can be anagrammed to form 10 people who have already achieve the goal.
